Periyar wildlife sanctuary is also known as Periyar Tiger reserve. It is located in Kerala state Idukki district. Periyar wildlife sanctuary is one of the famous sanctuaries in India.

Here so many wild animals like tiger, byson, langoor, elephants and more. Many indian tourists and foriegn tourists come and visit this place.

How to reach?

First of all you need to reach Thekkedy.

By Air: To reach thekkedy by air the nearest airport is Madhurai which is approxemately 140 kms. And another airport is Kochi and it is 190 kms to reach Thekkedy.

By Rail: Thekkedy nearest railway station is Kottayam. From there the distance is 115 kms

From Airport or Railway station you can easily get cabs to reach Thekkedy.

How to book tickets?

At booking counter you will see two kinds of tickets. One is park entry ticket and another one bus ticket. Here is the information about pricing..

Park entry fee:

  • Indian Adult Rs. 45/-
    Indian Child Rs. 15/-
    Bus Safari Rs. 20/-

After booking tickets you need to enter park by forest department bus. After entering the gate you will move towards boating counter.

It is difficult to get tickets in weekends and holidays. If you are planning in holidays or weekends you can book tickets online too on their official website. Or else you can book tickets at booking counter one day before also.

Activities in Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

Periyar wildlife sanctuary has some exciting activities which gives you pure wildlife experience. Here are some popular activities to explore in the sanctuary.

Boat Cruise on Periyar Lake

Boating in Periyar Lake is a wonderful experience. This is the major tourist attraction in Thekkedy. We can see forest and beautiful lake while boating. Also you will have glimpse of animals roaming around the forest. There are so many tigers in this forest but it is difficult to spot one.

Boat Timings:

7am – 9am
9:30am – 11am
11:15am – 12:45pm
1:45pm – 3:05pm
3:30pm – 5pm

Boat charges per adult Rs. 255/- for child Rs. 85/-
Note: You need to report at boating counter before 1 hour of your ride.

Bamboo Rafting in Periyar wildlife Sanctuary

This activity includes trekking & rafting. You will reach rafting point by trekking. The boats are made using Bamboo sticks. During the boating you will see the panoramic view of forest, sound of birds, water, and if you are lucky you will see the animals by the lake side. Bamboo rafting is an excellent & peaceful experience.

Bamboo Rafting Timings and Charges:

Full day per person Rs. 2900/- per person (2 persons required) starts at 8am to 5pm
Half day per person Rs. 2200/- per person (2 persons required) starts at 7:30am to 12:30pm and 9:30am to 2:30pm

Jungle Scout and Night Stay in Forest

It start will 3 hours night walk in forest. Forest officer and guide will come along with us. You can see live animals in periyar forest. The price for this adventure is Rs.1500/- per person.

Timings:

  • 7pm to 9:30pm
    10pm to 12:30am
    1am to 3:30am

Periyar wildlife Sanctuary Forest Border Hiking

Its a full day long range hiking. You will pass through periyar border into forest. You can see wild animals, birds, butterflies during hiking. Its a group hiking of 12 members along with the guide.

Charges and Timings:

Forest border hiking charges per person 2000/- starts at 8am to 5pm.
