Welcome to Thattekad. A paradise for Bird watchers and nature enthusiasts in south India. Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is Kerala’s first bird sanctuary. It is located 13km north-east of Kothamangalam along the Pooyamkutti road is in Ernakulam District, Kerala. This is also known as Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary. It is located on the northern bank of river Periyar Ernakulam District.

This sanctuary over 300 species of birds excluding migratory birds.

How to reach Thattekad Bird Sanctuary?

The nearest airport is Kochi. You can take a taxi on arrival. Your journey takes less than an hour. The distance is 40 kilometers from the Kochi airport.

If you are going by rail its better to choose Kochi. The distance is same.

Who is Salim Ali and what is the Story Behind Thattekad and Salim Ali?

It was Salim Ali who first recognised the richest bird habitat Thattekad during his travancore cochin ornithological survey during 1983. Salim Ali popularly referred as the “Birdman of India”, was the first indian to conduct systematic bird surveys across India.

It has wide range collection of birds like White-bellied-treepie (Dendrocitta Ieucogastra), Asian fairy blue bird (Irena puella), Hill Myna (Gracula religiosa), Malabar Starling (Sturnia blithii), Malabar Trogon (Harpactes fasciatus), Oriental dwarf kingfisher (Ceyx erithaca), Ceylon Frogmouth (Batrachostomus moniliger), Variety of Cormorants (Phalacrororax), Greater Racket-tailed Drongo (Dicrurus paradiseus), Malabar Grey-Hornbill (Ocyceros griseus), Green Bee-eater (Merops orientalis), Grey Junglefowl (Gallus sonneratii), Snake Bird (Anthinga anhinga), Lesser Whisting Duck (Dendrocygna javanica) its a migratory bird, Indian Scops Owl (Otus bakkamoena), Indian Paradise Flycatcher (Terpsiphone paradisi) and more….

Here there is a garden only for butterflies you can see wide range of collection here like for example Oriental Striped Tiger (Danaus genutia) and more…

You can see Golden Jackal, Sambar Deer, Elephants, Giant Malabar Squirrel and some soft animals too around the sanctuary.

What is the best time to visit Thattekad Bird Sanctuary

The best time to explore Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is from November to March. Beware of Leeches while exploring Thattekad.
